Merton is a small village in rural Devon located between Okehampton and Bideford. This makes Merton the ideal place for exploring the wonderful Devon countryside, coast and attractions.

Immediately within the Merton vicinity is the Tarka Trail which is a 22 mile trail for cycling or walking. Access to the Trail is only 1 mile away. The Tarka Trail passes through tranquil countryside and follows the river Torridge to the estuary at Bideford and beyond to the town of Barnstaple.

Just 10 minutes drive away is the historic town of Great Torrington with three renowned attractions. These are RHS Rosemoor Gardens, which is second only to RHS Wisley in terms of its size and range of plants and show gardens. Dartington Crystal which offers visits to the factory and shop for bargain blown glass and the Civil War Centre, 1646, offering a fascinating insight of life during the English Civil War as played out in Great Torrington.

Further a field there are many beautiful gardens to visit the most well known being the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, both of these are about 1 hour 15 minutes drive away.

Merton is also ideally placed for visiting Dartmoor National Park. There are many footpaths and trails as well as horse riding. Okehampton is the nearest point of access to the Moor which is 12 miles from Merton.

We can boast the spectacular north Devon coastline, famous for wonderful beaches, cliff top walks and steeped in smuggling and ship wrecking history. For those interested in water sports there is plenty of opportunity to surf, body board and fish.

There are also interesting market towns to visit such as Bideford, Barnstaple, South Molton and Okehampton. Devon’s two cities of Exeter and Plymouth are easily reached for day trips.

North Devon has much to offer from quiet countryside, to exhilarating wild coast line. Devon has many great pubs and restaurants, places to visit with fantastic scenery all in one of England’s least populated areas.
